Google Chrome

Google Chrome Google has recently released it’s new browser called Google Chrome.

First impressions upon installing it was it’s a clean and simple browser. You get the spacious feeling with only tabs and address bar on top.

After browsing a few of my favorite sites, I found that most pages appear correctly. Even the Joomla templates I’ve been working on. But Javascript problem was found on some pages.

Memory usage seems to be quite high after opening some tabs. Although it separates every tabs into single processes, all of them adds up to hundreds of megabytes of memory usage. And it appears that there’s no memory setting anywhere.

Some negative points :

  • No middle button scroll function found, which could be a downside for most users.
  • No extensions or widgets available.
  • No mouse gesture.
  • No speed dial
  • Handling bookmarks can be troublesome.
  • Needs a popup blocker.
  • Memory management
Overall, this is a new browser. Many improvements are needed. I found the concept seems to be on focusing with the content of the web pages we’re viewing, not on the browser itself. It has less features than what most browsers have. But we’re looking forward for the next releases.

HP Mininote 2133

HP Mininote 2133

Another product for the ultra mobile notebook series came from HP with its HP Mininote 2133. Having a price tag of around US$ 650, the Mininote will be quite a competition for Asus EEE PC and Acer Aspire One.
HP managed to design the Mininote to have a strong and smooth feeling over its case. The brushed steel doesn’t attract fingerprint easily. So it would be no problem to hold it in your bare hands.
The Mininote features a bright screen with a size of 8.9” and a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. That size means it has a screen large enough for your eyes, but such high resolution can be quite a problem if you intend to use it for a prolonged period. Texts will appear very small and hard to read. You may have eye-strain after a while. But the colors are amazing and crystal clear.
The Via C7 is a processor for ultramobiles. Power consumption may be low, but I’d say that the processing power is quite low, too. Running Vista on this Mininote can be quite a problem if you need the processing power. It should have something better on like Intel’s new Atom.
The memory of 1GB on the Mininote may be quite sufficient for running XP. But may not be enough for Vista as it need to share a portion of it for the graphics card.
Having a 120GB harddisk means that you can store a lot of data. You can even have two or three operating systems on your Mininote and still have some space for your favorite movies or songs.
Working on the Mininote won’t be of any problem since it has an almost full-sized keyboard. It’s very much larger than the EEE PC. But the touchpad arrangement can be annoying for a first time user. It feels like the touchpad buttons are misplaced. But in overall, every buttons need only a soft touch to press.
The Mininote may get pretty warm after a heavy usage. But on average, it’s quite cool for daily usage. The battery itself can last for about 4-5 hours under light browsing. It would be enough for two or three meetings in a day with your colleagues at your favorite Starbucks.
